Cooper’s Rock in the Fall

September in North-Central West Virginia often carries the beginning of noticeable leaf color transition.

On September 30th, 2023, Liz and I made a day trip to Cooper’s Rock. We had plans for our anniversary for the rest of the week (but they were changed, more on that later), so we just wanted to take a pretty day trip.

After we spent some time enjoying the overlook on the eponymous rock, we hiked down to the section called Rock City. These giant rocks show the millions of years of weathering by the ancient location of the Cheat River. I love roughly measuring the depths and the similar lines where water once flowed

Rock City offers a unique experience with those cooler breezes rolling between rock formations. In summer, there is almost a natural air conditioner as the boulders absorb the heat and let the breeze pass through the chasms.

As we hiked back, we saw a squirrel enjoying the afternoon sunlight with us and that sunlight his a beautiful spider's web just right to shimmer the full color spectrum.
